The approaches and concepts behind my current work are implied in the natural qualities of wood, combination of materials and aspects of modern architecture. My approach is to combine a variety of materials with the constructive properties of modern architecture into my work. I try to join the solidity and visual strength of inorganic materials with the organic material of wood. I also try to create a harmony by blending the fine crafted with an industrialized style. This harmony is achieved by selecting lumber of a particular species, which has unique qualities in the grain and color. I pay close attention to detail and technique, creating an industrialized style by using repetition of sequential cuts in the wood or by using metal hardware. The combination of styles merge and let the beauty of the natural wood exist alongside the beauty of the metal hardware.
The simplicity of my clean-lined natural approach to wood working is influenced by the work of Sam Maloof. I admire his use of a practical design and techniques through which he creates a harmony between form and function.Charles and Ray Ames, two other artists, whose use of a variety of materials, which combine organic and inorganic designs, also influenced me. Some of my early influences are the early American whirligigs, along with the work of Rube Goldberg, Paul Klee, Jean Tinguely, Peter Fishli and David Wiess. In general Rube Goldberg was influential for his ability to imagine machines for the insignificant, Klee for his pursuit of the inner child, and Jean Tinguely, Peter Fishli and David Wiess for their methods of construction, use of materials and humor.
For me making, collecting, and using art is enjoyable and enriches my daily life. I feel my work is unique because I am not attempting to ‘reinvent the wheel’ but simply bring a combination of my experiences and influences to the design and construction of furniture. My work is for people to use and enjoy daily for its function, craftsmanship and design.
Thank you for taking the time to scroll down to view my custom gallery. I would love the chance to design and build a handcrafted piece of furniture for you.
